100 Quilts for Chinese Orphans
Ruth Chabot, who is Sewing Supervisor at custom made hospital scrub garment producer and e-tailer Sassy Scrubs, received an award from the Company for her generous contribution of 100 custom made baby quilts she has created since May. She has contributed her quilts to the Blankets for Babies Project, which creates, collects and mails baby quilts, through her Company, to orphans residing in China.
Before dedicating to her blanket sewing marathon, Ruth had tried to make only one other quilt, a number of years before, and was not fond of the experience. Using cloth scraps available through her work at Sassy Scrubs, as leftover cloth when the Company’s uniform garments are cut from the fabric, and a hefty fabric supply at home, Ruth attempted quilt making again and found she really enjoyed designing the blankets and quilts and seeing them come together. She was excited to learn she enjoyed realizing the simple ways to pull pattern and color together to end up with a pleasing quilt blanket. Also, she enjoyed that she was indeed re-using the cloth scraps into an item which was both needed and appreciated. The end result was so heart-warming that Ruth continued to learn, and create, with a passion. Having earned so much expertise since May, she has found she can now examine a photo of an intricate quilt and cut and make it without using a pattern.
She takes photos of each quilted blanket she donates, and constructed a keepsake album, so she can remember the prints and designs of each blankets after they have been sent to keep babies warm. She flips through her photo album occasionally, and thinks about the babies and children she has helped keep warm through her quilting efforts.
To acknowledge her commitment to the homeless children of China, Sassy Scrubs presented Ruth with a plaque proclaiming her the “Quilting Queen” in addition to a gift certificate to an area fabric store, to replenish her stash of fabric.
